A first-class constraint generates an infinitesimal canonical transformation δF={F,ϵiφi}. For the phase-space action I=∫(pq˙−λiφi)dt, the multiplier transformation δλk=ϵ˙k−λiϵjCijk cancels the bulk variation when {φi,φj}=Cijkφk. The remaining temporal boundary term vanishes for parameters that vanish at the endpoints.
