For the linear-in-potential charged-scalar Lagrangian, π=ϕ˙∗−ieA0ϕ∗ and π∗=ϕ˙+ieA0ϕ. With Aμ=(A0,−A), the Hamiltonian density is
H=(π+ieA0ϕ∗)(π∗−ieA0ϕ)+∣∇ϕ∣2+m2∣ϕ∣2−ieA⋅(ϕ∇ϕ∗−ϕ∗∇ϕ).
(1)
The first product includes +e2A02∣ϕ∣2 after the Legendre transform; that term can arise in canonical variables even though the original Lagrangian has no interaction quadratic in A.
