A theoretical physicist who developed a collective-electron account of metallic ferromagnetism. Instead of treating every magnetic moment as belonging to an isolated atom, the approach considers electrons occupying extended states throughout a crystal. Combining Fermi-Dirac statistics with their interactions connected magnetic behavior with the occupation of electronic bands and its change with temperature.[ref]
