Core needle biopsy Created 2026-10-31 Updated 2026-11-05
A core needle biopsy removes a small cylinder of biological tissue through a hollow needle for examination, commonly by microscopy. Retaining a piece of tissue permits assessment of cellular arrangement as well as individual cells. It differs from merely imaging the region or sampling dissolved substances in blood. The specimen supplies evidence from the sampled location; its interpretation also depends on sampling adequacy and the surrounding clinical question. [ref]
