Dan Israël developed a systematic teaching account of string theory that connects the string worldsheet with quantization and conformal field theory. His notes work from the classical string description toward the quantum consistency and interaction problems.[ref]

The distinction between worldsheet coordinates and target-spacetime coordinates is foundational: a field on the two-dimensional worldsheet can describe how a string is embedded in a higher-dimensional spacetime. The formulation separates the model's internal description from the space in which its physical excitations are interpreted.

Verified primary text: section 5.2.3, printed pp. 118–120 (PDF pp. 120–122), equations (5.53), (5.57)–(5.60). The improved current has weight one at matter central charge 26. Its self-OPE retains higher-order poles; the simple-pole obstruction to nilpotence vanishes at criticality. The PDF text extraction loses derivatives in the simple-pole term; the wiki only reproduces the unambiguous higher-order terms and states residue cancellation.
