For a continuous map f:X→Y, the derived direct image Rf∗ is obtained by applying f∗ to an injective resolution. Composition with derived global sections gives RΓ(Y,Rf∗E)≅RΓ(X,E).

Derived direct image of sheaves
For a proper map of locally compact spaces and a constructible complex E, the derived stalk satisfies (Rf∗E)y≅RΓ(f−1(y),E∣f−1(y)). In particular (Rif∗Q)y≅Hi(f−1(y);Q). Properness is what prevents fibre cohomology from missing nearby sections.
