The polynomial identity
a3−b3=(a−b)(a2+ab+b2)
(1)
follows by multiplying out the right side. For real a,b, the quadratic factor is a2+ab+b2=(a+b/2)2+3b2/4, so it is nonnegative and vanishes only when a=b=0. The identity is a special case of the finite geometric series factorisation an−bn=(a−b)∑j=0n−1an−1−jbj.
