Near the polar axis of a magnetic dipole field, B∝r−3. Conservation of magnetic flux in a flux tube consequently gives A(r)∝r3. A dipole magnetic-field line intersecting a sphere of radius R⋆ at small polar angle θ⋆ obeys
θ(r)2≃θ⋆2R⋆r,A(r)≃πr2θ(r)2=πθ⋆2R⋆r3.
(1)
This area is for one polar tube. The approximation requires θ⋆2r/R⋆≪1; the full magnetic dipole field does not remain a narrow polar tube at arbitrarily large radius.
