The unit-response sequence a1=a2=1, an+2−an+1+an=0 is six-periodic. In the displayed convolution, all older terms cancel under Pk+2−Pk+1+Pk by this recurrence; the two new boundary terms reduce to fk+2. Thus it gives a particular solution of the inhomogeneous linear recurrence with forcing fk+2. Add the two-dimensional homogeneous span of cos(kπ/3) and sin(kπ/3) for the general solution. This is a discrete Green function construction.
