For a scalar field with X=−q2/2, Lagrangian F(X) and stress-energy tensor Tab=F′qaqb+Fgab, the inequalities A=F′≥0 and Y=XF′−F≥0 imply the dominant energy condition for any gradient type. In a local Lorentz frame, ρ=A(q02+∑iqi2)/2+Y≥0 and ρ2−∑iT0i2=A2X2+A(q02+∑iqi2)Y+Y2≥0.
