Don N. Page 2026-11-05
Don N. Page investigated equilibrium black-hole thermodynamics with Stephen Hawking. Their 1983 work showed that sufficiently large black holes in Anti-de Sitter spacetime can have positive heat capacity and coexist in stable thermal equilibrium with radiation.[ref]
Thermodynamics of black holes in anti-de Sitter space by Stephen Hawking and Don N. Page. Abstract and sections 2–3: temperature branches and canonical ensemble
The canonical ensemble distinguishes local stability from global preference: a locally stable black-hole solution need not have lower free energy than the competing thermal state.

Stephen Hawking studied how gravitation and quantum physics change thermal equilibrium. In his 1983 collaboration with Don N. Page, a negative cosmological constant altered the temperature–size relation of a black hole, permitting a large positive-heat capacity branch in Anti-de Sitter spacetime.[ref]
Thermodynamics of black holes in anti-de Sitter space by Stephen Hawking and Don N. Page. Sections 2–3: Euclidean temperature and canonical thermodynamics
This provided a concrete phase transition problem in black-hole thermodynamics, comparing the free energies of black-hole and thermal-radiation configurations under the same boundary conditions.
By Stephen Hawking and Don N. Page. Communications in Mathematical Physics 87, 577–588. Section 2 gives the Schwarzschild–anti-de Sitter geometry and its Euclidean temperature; section 3 treats the canonical ensemble and the distinction between local and global thermodynamic stability. The original printed paper is dated 1983, despite some repository records giving 1982.
