An Eulerian mean flow is obtained by averaging the velocity field at fixed spatial positions, for example over longitude or over an ensemble. It differs from a parcel-following average. In the transformed Eulerian mean, its meridional circulation is corrected by an eddy-induced contribution to form the residual mean circulation.
