Represent y by translation t↦t+1 and x by t↦t/3; the relator holds and y has infinite order. Base-three digits dj∈{0,1,2} give words recursively by W0=1, Wj+1=x−1Wjxydj. These have length at most 4k and represent all ym, 0≤m<3k. Thus the growth function of a finitely generated group obeys β(4k)≥3k. Counting freely reduced words in four letters gives β(n)≤2⋅3n−1. The growth is therefore exponential up to coarse equivalence.
