For a potential of period a, the Floquet matrix M(E) maps Cauchy data through one cell:
(ψ(x+a)ψ′(x+a))=M(E)(ψ(x)ψ′(x)).

For a real Schrodinger equation, detM=1.

Floquet matrix for a one-dimensional periodic potential
The Floquet multipliers solve
μ2−tr(M)μ+1=0.

Bounded Bloch waves occur when ∣trM∣≤2, with μ=e±iKa. Band edges satisfy trM=±2; outside the bands the multipliers are real reciprocal numbers and one solution grows exponentially.
