For Dμ=∂μ+Aμ and δϕ=Λϕ, covariance requires δAμ=−∂μΛ+[Λ,Aμ]. Expanding [Dμ,Dν] gives Fμν=∂μAν−∂νAμ+[Aμ,Aν], and operator Jacobi gives δFμν=[Λ,Fμν]. An invariant internal quadratic form makes its Yang-Mills kinetic contraction gauge invariant. Couplings and factors of i are absorbed into the connection in this convention.
