Compare independent Gaussian samples Rs,Rn with means μs,μn and common variance σ2. Choosing the larger is correct when Rs−Rn>0. The difference has mean μs−μn and variance 2σ2, so standardization proves the displayed relation. Correlated samples, unequal variances or a different response rule need a different calculation.
