For smooth 2π-periodic f, the equation ut−uxx+u=f is the negative L2 gradient flow of If[u]=21∫(ux2+u2−2fu)dx. Periodic integration by parts gives dIf/dt=−∫ut2dx. Its unique equilibrium has Fourier coefficients fn/(1+n2), and every transient coefficient decays as e−(1+n2)t. Thus the flow converges to the unique minimizer of the energy.
