Two Lagrangian densities differing by a total derivative yield the same action under suitable boundary conditions. For example ∂μ(ϕ3∂μϕ)=3ϕ2(∂ϕ)2+ϕ3□ϕ. Likewise ϕ□2ϕ≃−∂ϕ⋅∂□ϕ≃(□ϕ)2≃(∂μ∂νϕ)2. These are algebraic relations modulo boundary terms, not uses of the equation of motion.
