For a free real scalar field expanded with measure d3p/[(2π)32Ep] and fp=e−ip⋅x, the displayed Klein-Gordon inner product extracts its annihilation operator. Indeed (fp,fq)=(2π)32Epδ3(p−q) and (fp,fq∗)=0; spatial Fourier inversion removes the measure. Taking the Hermitian adjoint gives a†(p)=−i∫d3xfp∂tϕ. The equal-time canonical commutation relation then gives [a(p),a†(q)]=(2π)32Epδ3(p−q).
