For a nonnegative smooth bump function supported in an open set, multiplying a Riemannian metric by increases volume there for while leaving the metric elsewhere fixed. For distinct regular compact domains a perturbation supported in the interior of one outside the other breaks equal volume, and therefore breaks any isometry between the domains. The perturbations tend to the original metric in the smooth topology.
A maximal Cauchy development is the largest globally hyperbolic solution, unique up to an appropriate isometry, determined by admissible initial data, with the initial hypersurface a Cauchy hypersurface. It can sometimes be extended as a spacetime across a Cauchy horizon even though that extension is no longer globally determined by the initial hypersurface.

If a group has a properly discontinuous group action by isometries that is also a cocompact group action on a nonempty proper metric space that is a geodesic metric space, then the group is finitely generated and every orbit map from the word metric for any finite generating set of a group is a quasi-isometry. Finite stabilizers are permitted.
Parabolic isometry of the hyperbolic plane Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-09-24
A nonidentity orientation-preserving isometry of the hyperbolic plane is parabolic when it has one fixed point on the ideal boundary and none in the plane. In the upper half-plane model, every parabolic isometry is conjugate to a nonzero horizontal translation.
