J. Hans D. Jensen developed a nuclear shell model in which strong spin-orbit coupling reorganizes the levels available to protons and neutrons. The mechanism connects the observed nuclear magic numbers with gaps in a one-particle spectrum: filling a level with total angular momentum accommodates magnetic substates. His historical lecture describes how measured nuclear spins, binding patterns and other spectroscopic evidence constrained the model, rather than treating the choice of level ordering as purely mathematical.[ref]
