The Clifford algebra gives Sμν=21​γμγν−21​ημνI. Reordering one more gamma matrix gives [Sμν,γρ]=ηνργμ−ημργν. The commutator derivation identity then gives
[Sμν,Sρσ]=ηνρSμσ−ημρSνσ+ηνσSρμ−ημσSρν,

so these matrices represent the Lorentz algebra. This convention has no extra factor of i; the spatial generators are −2i​ϵjkldiag(σl,σl).
