A plane-parallel magnetostatic equilibrium with constant downward gravitational acceleration g, horizontal magnetic field, constant isothermal sound speed cs, and constant Alfvén speed va has
H=gcs2+va2/2,ρ=ρ0e−z/H,p=cs2ρ,B=B0e−z/(2H).
(1)
Indeed the magnetohydrodynamic total pressure is (cs2+va2/2)ρ, and its vertical derivative is −gρ. The magnetic pressure therefore increases the scale height above that of an unmagnetized atmosphere.
