For independent coordinates with L=∑imi(x˙i2−ω2xi2)/2, the variables Xi=mixi give an isotropic oscillator even at unequal masses. Rotations of the Xi are continuous symmetries. Their conserved Noether charges XiPj−XjPi therefore predate any equality of physical masses. Equal masses alone cannot create new invariances of arbitrary additional interactions.
