For slope 0≤α≤1 and intercept ρ, the lower mechanical word has letters wn=⌊(n+1)α+ρ⌋−⌊nα+ρ⌋. These letters are zero or one. Replacing floors by ceilings defines the upper mechanical word. An irrational slope gives a Sturmian word.
