For constant water-production rate per wetted area sm, dry zero-flux noses and footprint length L(t), the moving-boundary conservation of mass gives V˙=smL per out-of-plane span. Consequently V¨=smL˙. Equivalently the melt volume is sm∫0tL(t′)dt′; a point begins producing melt only after the front arrives.
