Translation of tau by one gives θ[α,β](z,τ+1)=e−πiα(α−1)θ[α,β+α−1/2](z,τ). Gaussian Poisson summation gives θ[α,β](z/τ,−1/τ)=−iτeπiz2/τ+2πiαβθ[β,−α](z,τ). The square root is the holomorphic branch positive at tau=i. These formulas keep the characteristic phase, which is lost if one states only the transformation of unshifted theta constants.
