Monochromatic internal-wave overturning criterion (∣mAζ∣>1)

For a plane internal gravity wave with vertical displacement ζ, linear density advection gives ρ′=−ρˉzζ. In a constant stable gradient, ρz=ρˉz(1−ζz), so static overturning begins when the maximum of ζz exceeds one. A monochromatic displacement has maximum ∣mAζ∣. The criterion predicts the failure of the small-amplitude field, rather than a valid continuation of linear theory beyond overturning.
