The multiplication table problem asks how many distinct integers occur as ab with 1≤a,b≤N. Counting the N2 pairs greatly overcounts the distinct products.

Multiplication table problem
Concentration of the prime omega function near loglogN, together with ω(ab)=ω(a)+ω(b)−ω(gcd(a,b)) and the bounded mean of ω(gcd(a,b)), gives M(N)≪N2/loglogN. This elementary argument uses only distinct prime factors.
