Let Nq(n) be the number of monic irreducible polynomials of polynomial degree n over Fq. Factoring Xqn−X into all such polynomials whose degrees divide n gives
qn=∑d∣ndNq(d).
(1)
The Möbius inversion formula therefore gives
Nq(n)=n1∑d∣nμ(d)qn/d.
