For L=d2/dx2 on (0,π) with zero endpoints, the zero-parameter Green function is −x<(π−x>)/π. Its eigenfunctions are 2/πsin(nx) with eigenvalues −n2. At x=ξ=π/2, the kernel is −π/4 and its expansion contains precisely the odd reciprocal squares, giving the displayed identity.
