For a Conformal Killing vector field, the same metric compatibility calculation gives
LXgμν=∇μXν+∇νXμ=2λgμν.
(1)
Thus its Conformal Killing equation is ∇(μXν)=λgμν. Taking the tensor contraction with the inverse metric, and using gμνgμν=4, determines the conformal Killing factor:
∇(μXν)=λgμν,λ=41∇μXμ.
(2)
Parentheses include the factor 1/2 in tensor index symmetrization.
