a
If p is a prime number and p∤a, multiplication by a permutes the nonzero residue classes modulo p: ai≡aj implies i≡j because a has a multiplicative inverse. Multiplying all the permuted classes gives
ap−1(p−1)!≡(p−1)!(modp).
(1)
The factorial is a nonzero element of the finite field Fp, so cancellation is valid. Therefore
ap−1≡1(modp),
(2)
which is Fermat's little theorem.
