Write the adjunction bijections as ΦA,B:D(FA,B)≅C(A,GB), natural in A,B. The adjunction unit and adjunction counit are
ηA=ΦA,FA(1FA),εB=ΦGB,B−1(1GB).
(1)
Thus η:1C⇒GF and ε:FG⇒1D are natural transformations, by naturality of the bijections. For any h:FA→B and k:A→GB, their transposes satisfy
Φ(h)=GhηA,Φ−1(k)=εBFk.
(2)
The first follows by naturality in the target applied to 1FA; the second follows by naturality in the source applied to 1GB. These formulas make the definitions operational for every arrow.
