Put r=(x2+y2)1/2. Since x2y2≤(x2+y2)2/4, the nonzero-point expression satisfies
0≤∣f(x,y)∣≤4r2,r∣f(x,y)−f(0,0)∣≤4r⟶0.
(1)
Thus the defining remainder condition for differentiability holds with the zero linear map:
Df(0,0)=0.
(2)
The estimate controls every approach direction at once, which is stronger than merely finding the two zero partial derivatives.
