Write the holomorphic function as f=u+iv. Analyticity gives smooth real and imaginary parts satisfying the Cauchy-Riemann equations ux=vy, uy=−vx. Differentiating these identities shows
Δu=vyx−vxy=0,Δv=−uyx+uxy=0.
(1)
Thus both parts are harmonic functions. The product rule then gives
Δ∣f∣2=Δ(u2+v2)=2(ux2+uy2+vx2+vy2)+2uΔu+2vΔv=4(ux2+vx2).
(2)
Since f′=ux+ivx, this proves the Laplacian identity for the squared modulus of a holomorphic function,
Δ∣f(z)∣2=4∣f′(z)∣2.
