The direct image sheaf is defined by
(ϕ∗F)(U)=F(ϕ−1U).
(1)
Its restrictions are the restrictions of F. Inverse images preserve covers and intersections, so the sheaf gluing axiom holds immediately. The morphism of ringed spaces supplies
ϕ#:OX(U)⟶OY(ϕ−1U).
(2)
An element of OX(U) acts on the displayed sections through this ring map and the original OY-module action. This makes the direct image sheaf an OX-module; no additional sheafification is required.
