Choose the transverse axis so that the photon travels in the xy plane. Its energy-momentum four-vector is pμ=(E/c,Ecosθ/c,Esinθ/c,0). A Lorentz boost of speed v along x, with β=v/c and γ=(1−β2)−1/2, gives
E′/c=γ(E/c−βpx),px′=γ(px−βE/c).
(1)
Because a photon has zero invariant mass, ∣p′∣=E′/c. Therefore
E′=1−β2E(1−βcosθ),cosθ′=E′cpx′=1−βcosθcosθ−β.
(2)
The first is the relativistic Doppler effect in angular form, and the second is relativistic aberration.
