Write X=∑ixi>0 and d=∑ivi. The exponential survival likelihood has ℓ(λ)=dlogλ−λX. Its score is d/λ−X, and for d>0 its second derivative is −d/λ2<0. Thus the exponential-rate estimation from censored exposure gives
λ=Xd.
(1)
All observation times, including censoring times, belong in X. If d=0, the likelihood decreases with positive λ and has its supremum as λ↓0; under the stated strict positivity constraint there is no interior maximum.
