For radiation in cosmology, ρ∝a−4 by the cosmological perfect-fluid continuity equation. The flat Friedmann equation gives a∝t1/2, so a∝η in conformal time. Hence 1+z=η0/ηe.
The opposite galaxies again have separation 2(η0−ηe). Direct communication requires this to be at most ηe, so
zc=21for direct communication.
(1)
For overlap of their past light cones, the criterion is instead ηe≥η0/2, giving zc=1 for a shared causal past. The two notions are precisely those distinguished in direct cosmological communication and a shared causal past.
