Squaring the finite geometric sum in the Fejér kernel gives its Fourier series
Fn(t)=2πn1∑j=0n−1eijt2=2π1∑∣r∣<n(1−n∣r∣)eirt.
(1)
For a fixed positive integer k and n>k, convolution therefore gives σn(eikx)=(1−k/n)eikx. Taking the real part,
∥σn(coskx)−coskx∥∞=nk.
(2)
The ratio to 1/n is the nonzero constant k, even though the function is infinitely differentiable. This Fejér saturation on a Fourier mode disproves an o(n−1) estimate for all C2 periodic functions.
