Suppose x2≡−1(modp). Then p∤x, so Fermat's little theorem gives xp−1≡1. But p≡3(mod4) makes (p−1)/2 odd, and hence
xp−1=(x2)(p−1)/2≡(−1)(p−1)/2=−1(modp).
(1)
Since this p is odd, 1≡−1(modp), a contradiction. There is no square root of minus one in this case.
