For the exponential distribution of mean μ, MX(t)=(1−μt)−1. Substitution into the geometric-sum moment-generating function gives
MS(t)=p−μtp(t<p/μ).
(1)
This is the moment-generating function of an exponential distribution with rate p/μ. By the uniqueness theorem for moment-generating functions, the geometric sum of exponential variables therefore has probability density function
fS(s)=μpe−ps/μ(s>0),fS(s)=0(s<0).
(2)
Its expected value is μ/p, agreeing with E[N]E[X]=μ/p in the random sum of independent claims formula.
