The Bernstein polynomial is the positive weighted average
Bn(f,x)=∑k=0nf(k/n)bn,k(x),bn,k(x)=(kn)xk(1−x)n−k.
(1)
For 0≤x≤1, the Bernstein basis weights are nonnegative and the binomial theorem gives ∑k=0nbn,k(x)=1. Hence ∣Bn(f,x)∣≤∑k∥f∥∞bn,k(x)=∥f∥∞. In particular,
∥Bn(f)∥∞≤∥f∥∞.
(2)
This is the contraction property of the positive linear operator on continuous functions defined by the Bernstein polynomial.
