Construct the matrix of a linear map by expressing the images of the basis vectors in that same basis:
Lej=∑i=12Aijei.
(1)
Thus the jth column is [Lej]B. For v=v1e1+v2e2, linearity gives
[Lv]B=A[v]B.
(2)
The column [Lv]B is a coordinate vector; reconstructing the actual vector requires Lv=(A[v]B)1e1+(A[v]B)2e2. This distinguishes the linear map from its basis-dependent matrix.
