Fermat's little theorem reduces the exponent modulo 22 because 23 is a prime number and 5 is coprime to it. Compute 52≡3(mod22), then 54≡9(mod22) and 55≡45≡1(mod22). Thus 55=22k+1 for an integer k, and
555=522k+1≡(522)k5≡5(mod23).
(1)
The exponent is 55=3125, rather than an iterated left-associated power.
