For a scalar u∈BV(Ω), put Et={x∈Ω:u(x)>t}. The coarea formula for BV functions is the measure identity
∣Du∣(A)=∫RPer(Et;A)dt
(1)
for every Borel A⊆Ω. For almost every real t, Et is a finite-perimeter set, with Per(Et;A)=∣DχEt∣(A). In particular TV(u)=∫RPer(Et;Ω)dt. This is relative perimeter: it counts interfaces inside Ω, and does not add the boundary jump of a zero extension.
