Suppose C=SΛCS−1 and D=SΛDS−1 for an invertible S and diagonal matrices ΛC,ΛD. Since diagonal matrices commute,
CD=SΛCΛDS−1=SΛDΛCS−1=DC.
(1)
Therefore simultaneous diagonalization implies commutation. This argument works over either R or C and explains why simultaneous diagonalization produces commuting operators.
