For η>0, use the weak maximum principle for elliptic operators perturbation ϕη(x)=ϕ(x)+η∣x∣2. Its Laplacian is at least 4η, so the preceding argument puts its maximum on the boundary. If R2=maxΩˉ∣x∣2, then, for any x∈Ωˉ,
ϕ(x)≤max∂Ωϕ+ηR2.
(1)
Letting η↓0 gives ϕ(x)≤max∂Ωϕ. The boundary is compact, so this maximum is attained. This proves the weak weak maximum principle for elliptic operators even when the Laplacian may vanish.
