The canonical momentum is p=Lq˙, and a regular Legendre transform in mechanics defines H(q,p,t)=pq˙−L(q,q˙,t) after solving for q˙. Its differential is
dH=q˙dp−Lqdq−Ltdt,
(1)
because the dq˙ terms cancel. With the Euler-Lagrange equation p˙=Lq, this gives Hamilton's equations
q˙=Hp,p˙=−Hq.
(2)
In particular Hq=−Lq at corresponding velocities, so a cyclic coordinate for the Lagrangian is also cyclic for the Hamiltonian.
